Usurpers
Usurpers was a body of research produced as part of a 12-month Research Fellowship with the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam, from 2020-21. The project focused on ocean-going vessels, appraising historic and contemporary thinking on the sea, the vessel, and the shore and was conducted alongside teaching at the GRA. Begun during the global pandemic, the project examined cruise liners in
particular: how they confound terrestrial authorities, escape jurisdictions, and function as discrete spatial constructs. The research was presented through four essays, three drawings, and a pamphlet.
